First-time director Robin Hardy and acclaimed writer Anthony Shaffer (twin brother of Peter, and author of FRENZY and SLEUTH [both 1972], the latter based on his stageplay) attempted to revise the terror genre with this cult popular concerning a deeply religious police sergeant (Edward Woodward, in a note-perfect performance) whose search for an apparently missing schoolgirl on a remote Scottish island exposes a Pagan society rooted in broken-down superstitions and the like of vengeful gods. To the accompaniment of a haunting get by Paul Giovanni, comprising variations on used songs and folk music, THE WICKER MAN depicts an isolated community at odds with the world at stout, steeped in outmoded beliefs and ruled with untrue benevolence by a patriarchal figure (Christopher Lee, in unusually subtle manufacture) whom the script suggests is a terrifying con man, maintaining the island’s customs not through friendly convictions, but because the islanders – all of them good disciples of the cause – simply know no other draw.

The central mystery (Woodward’s search for the missing girl) is genuinely titillating, and the bawdy songs which greet the sergeant’s arrival are soon replaced by an earthy sensuality as the lawful extent of the islanders’ conception in regenerative powers – divorced from weak notions of ‘morality’ – become apparent. Lee’s assessment of God verges on blasphemy (”He had His chance and… blew it!”), but ultimately, neither Christianity or Paganism emerges with any dignity from the devastating finale. There’s right magic in every frame of this wonderful film, though it’s clearly not for everyone: If you don’t ‘get it’ within the first ten minutes, then the careful plug and deliberate absence of familiar fear motifs may seem a microscopic long-winded, even stupid. Everyone else, however, will be enchanted by this unusual, one-of-a-kind movie.

The filmmakers themselves have roundly condemned the shorter ‘theatrical version’ (88 minutes) which crept into UK theaters in 1973 as benefit for Nicolas Roeg’s DON’T Peek NOW. However, most viewers were first introduced to TWM via the shorter print, simply because it was the only available version for many years, and despite the makers’ protestations to the contrary, it’s quiet a grand experience.

The filmmakers’ preferred print (100m) underlines the script’s major themes and streamlines the anecdote, and will be a revelation to anyone who’s only ever seen the theatrical print or the 95m version unearthed by the BBC. There are a few bits and pieces in the theatrical version which are strange to that print, and the BBC edition includes an lively ‘Sun God’ which appears after the closing credits, filling the veil before shooting backwards into darkness. The loss of this brief, iconic fraction from most extant versions is inexplicable.

This is a POWERHOUSE of a movie that will blow your mind!!!

It is listed as a anxiety film, when actually it is SO Powerful MORE. If one classify the genre, I would say Mystery.

It begins with an anonymous letter to the Scottish Constable ( Edward Woodward of Equilizer fame) telling of Summer Isle. A local girl is missing and none of the villagers seems to display any interest. Flying to the petite Isle, Woodward arrives unbiased before Beltane, the pagan May Day Festivals and the bag the Island completely immersed in the Pagan ways of Auld. Head of the Isle is Lord Summerisle (British scare account Christopher Lee – Dracula for Hammer Films – in his favourite performance), the leader of his pagan island, and it is sure he not only is aware of the villagers beliefs, he encourages them!

Slowly, Woodward comes to contain the girl is being held for Sacrifice on May Day as he races to establish her.

Brilliant performance from Britt Eckland (broken-down Mrs. Peter Sellers and one of the gigantic beauties of her time – * though most of the nude shots are not her since she was pregnant at the time) Hammer awe actress Ingrid Pitt and Diane Cilento (the first Mrs. Sean Connery, mother of Jason) contribute to the eerie feel.

The movie portrays pagan beliefs in an unHollywood style, that goes for substance and facts, rather than sensationalism. The scenery is gorgeous and the music written for the film is haunting.

The film faced many production problems, to being passed through several production companies, a lot of lost footage from the film editor – a devoutly religious man who conception is ghastly to be filming this and was systematically destroying as remarkable as he could, and indifferent reediting by Roger Corman, and then nearly dying in awful handly in the theatres. Was not seen for nearly two decades, and the version in existence was Corman’s poorly edited one, missing over 20 minutes of the 101 microscopic recent verson.

I spent years and year trying to track down a copy, and finally for a short time news was salubrious. The director found that he had an recent copy level-headed in his area. This was released the VHS – first time the 101 version had been seen in nearly two decades!! Shortly after, it was pulled from the shelves. Corman’s version ( a nice companion part so it was made of a lot of out takes) came out for a spell.

So I am overjoyed to inspect this one on DVD and protected for all time.

Warning: some flashes of Eckland and her stand-in nude, and people of a very religious nature will not like the deny. Otherwise, this is one astounding knock out of a film.

4. Things get freaky

Me being a Bruce Dickinson fan to the max, I decided to rent this film after being excited about it finally being released here. Originally released in the UK as “Chemical Wedding”, The film is about Professor Haddo, a bumbling teacher who offers himself for a transformation experiment and soon becomes possessed by Aleister Crowley, which soon turns the school (and the town) upside down.

This film is a pretty cool movie, but incredibly flawed one. It was Co-written by Bruce Dickinson and directed by Julian Doyle, and stars Simon Callow as Haddo, turning in his best performance. We also get a brief glimpse into Crowley before his death (played by John Shrapnel), and a cameo by Brucey himself (as the guy with thick rimmed glasses at the beginning).

There are lots of flaws though. The film feels really rushed, I wanted to sort of know more about Crowley’s life in general. There’s a bit too much sex in this film- I know Crowley believed in sexual magic, but did we really need that sweaty orgy scene? They could have implied it instead of making it like 8 minutes long. And I’ll admit the effects were a bit cheesy, but then again this IS a low budget movie.

Anyways, this film is worth it for the finale alone despite the cheesy special effects. This is a pretty good movie, but be aware… this is definitely not for everyone.

I first became aware of Aleister Crowley through press reports that Jimmy Page of led Zeppelin, had been studying the occultist. A period of reading the books of Dennis Wheatley brought a greater awareness of the occult where Crowley’s name was frequently mentioned.

This film begins with the impending death of the man whilst being visited by two students from Cambridge University (UK). Just before he dies he curses one of the students and inflicts serious injury to him. Sixty years on, at Cambridge there is a conjunction between scientific experiments in a virtual world and the continuing tradition of the occult within the confines of the University. During that conjunction, one of the dons becomes possessed by the spirit of Crowley and graduall transforms into him

The transformation presages a series of events which appear to have been predestined by Crowley and his followers many years before. The purpose of the events gradually unfolds, as they tend to do in these matters, into the return of the fallen angel.

Simon Callow, the RSC actor excels in his portrayal of the restored Crowley. His energies reflect the larger than life personality of the occultist and the notorious acts for which he was infamous during his lifetime. This is a film of graphic sexuality and bodily functions. Although there is nudity and depictions of orgies and other sexual acts, they are not exhibited except in their role as part of the magickal power. The acts are more of the means by which spells are enacted, a transference of the power of the body into other powerful forms.

Many people will find this film objectionable for a variety of reasons, the subject of the occult or satanic worship, the sexual nature and use of profanities, the rejection of christian sensibilities or for many other reasons. Nevertheless it is a powerful depiction of the life of Crowley itself. Ultimately, in the final scenes of the film, very reminiscent of the previous fim, The Devil Rides Out, the world is restored to order.

Given the difficult subject matter, I think that this film has done a first rate job in enlightening the life and works of Aleister Crowley and is to be commended for it.

This was the very first film made in post-World War II Germany, and it is ranked as one of the most important German films ever made. 15 million Germans saw it between 1946 and 1950. The story begins as a concentration camp survivor, Susanne Wallner, returns to her home in Berlin. She discovers that her apartment is occupied by a former Wehrmacht doctor, Hans Mertens. An experience during the war has seared his soul, and he is a damaged human being. Ultimately, we find out why. The event in question, and the callous manner in which it took place, is horrific.

This film takes on, in a hard-hitting way, the fact that many Germans walking around in 1946 had been complicit in, or even ordered, atrocities. (Hence, the title, “The Murderers Are Among Us.”) It raises, and attempts to answer, the question of how it affected them. According to the film, some were tormented by their actions; others refused to accept any blame for them and went right back to “normal” life.

The film does not attempt to take on, however, the Nazi plan to exterminate the Jewish people. Susanne is a Christian, as is everyone else in the film. The graves all have crosses. At least in the English subtitles, the word “Jew” is not used once in this film. One would walk out of this film without knowing that there had ever been Jews in Germany, or understanding that their annihilation was a prime effort of Nazi Germany. (However, the film’s 1946 German audience surely would have been able to put the film into context.) Additionally, the film nowhere describes what Susanne went through in the concentration camps. The focus is entirely on how the war psychologically damaged Dr. Mertens. Susanne is there to love and support him, and enable him to achieve redemption. But who is really the victim here?

These criticisms do not in any way diminish the power of the film, which cannot possibly cover all the ground of Nazi atrocities. Future films, from many different countries, would explore other aspects. Given that the film was made in Germany in 1946, it is remarkable that it is as hardhitting as it is.

The backstory of this film is interesting, too. Immediately after the war, the western Allies, concerned that German filmmakers were too steeped in Nazi propaganda to make films, did not allow moviemaking in the western sectors. This fear was not unfounded. According to the liner notes, the star of this film, Ernst Wilhelm Borchert, had been a member of the Nazi party and Wolfgang Staudte himself had had a small role in the film “Jud Suess,” described on another site as an “Anti-Semitic Nazi propaganda film, depicting the Jew as a financier to dukes and noblemen.” The Soviets, however, were interested in getting films made in German. Thus, Staudte filmed it in the Soviet sector, using the new DEFA studios, which would later become the national studios of East Germany. This film demonstrated to the world that Germans were capable of facing their past and moving forward toward democracy.

The fact that this film was made in 1946 enabled Wolfgang Staudte to film in the actual ruins of Berlin — even interspersing a shot of the Trummerfrauen (rubble women) rebuilding the city. This adds an unmatchable sense of realism to the topic. This film is a must-see.

There have been many movies about soldiers returning home from war, especially since Vietnam (Coming Home and The Deer Hunter leading into films like Courage Under Fire). But before the 70’s it was rare to find a film that analyzed the absolute losing side’s perspective. How do soldiers return to life if they are deemed losers by the whole world? In Staudte’s film two soldiers return home to the ruins of post-war Berlin. The irony is that the one who courageously defended innocents finds himself destitute and plagued by nightmares while his sadistic officer has seamlessly blended back into the broken society. The film follows Ernst Borchert’s character as he takes up with a woman and searches for a place for his life and a purposeful identity.
The power of the film is found in its realistic atmosphere shot in 1946 and in its uncompromising ambiguity. It is too early to make judgements on the completed WWII rather Staudte uses the medium to highlight the cyclical nature of violence. This is the notion that wars must be avoided at all costs for the damage they do is beyond any possible benefit as well as human comprehension. On that note, many see Murderers Among Us as a post-war message of hope. A prophecy that the German people would unite again as they had in the past, and again find some semblance of community. Only hopefully this time tempered by cool rationality. All in all, a decent film and one that begs comparison to the Hollywood mechanizations of the time epitomized in The Best Years of Our Lives.

Anime can be pretty weird — just look at series like “Paranoia Agent” and “Boogiepop Phantom.” Really weird, sometimes impossible to totally understand.

But for sheer strangeness and kookiness, the winner has got to be “Fooly Cooly (FLCL).” Even as it pokes fun at typical anime, it tells the surrealist story of a very odd coming-of-age, complete with strange plots, oddball characters, and robots sprouting out of a young boy’s head.

Naota is a young boy living what he sees as an oppressively dull existance, in a quiet city dominated by the Medical Mechanica building. The closest thing to excitement is fending off the advances of his brother’s troubled girlfriend Mamimi.

Then sudenly a girl on a Vespa runs him over, resuscitates him with a smooch, and then bashes him over the head with a bass guitar. That evening, Naota finds that instead of a bump, he has a horn growing out of his head, and no idea what it is or how to get rid of it.

Despite his efforts to avoid her, Naoto’s kooky father has hired the crazy Vespa girl, Haruko, as a housekeeper. To make matters worse, his “horn” turns out to be a robot and a giant mechanical hand — springing out of a channel in his head. And you thought YOU had problems.

The five episodes that follow don’t get any more normal, as Naota must deal with the Mayor’s daughter getting his strange power, cat ears, more robots, baseball, bombs, the Pirate King Atomsk, seaweed eyebrows, and the interplanetary Medical Mechanica which may or may not be intent on galactic domination. It all clashes in the final episode.

For newbies, “FLCL” is probably the WORST anime to start with. It’s a parodic mishmash of anime in-jokes — giant robots, fanservice, boy falls for kooky abusive alien girl — and a storyline that is bizarre to the point where you may not be able to understand what’s going on. But oh, is it a fun ride.

As if the plot weren’t hyperactive enough, the animation is exaggerated and crazy, full of distorted faces and wild robot battles. Lots of action and overdramatic dialogue (”OH NO…. OOOOOOOOO… an American GIRLFRIEND!”). As if it weren’t funny enough, the director sprinkles in homages to other shows, ranging from other anime to “South Park.”

And the characters are as bizarre as the story itself. Naoto starts off as a typical bored preteen, but slowly gains confidence and guts as he gets immersed in the weirdness. Haruko is a completely off-the-wall kook who is apparently an alien. And there’s a bunch of other weird characters — troubled pyromaniacs, wistful robots, preteen pervs, and a guy from Interstellar Immigration.

Incidentally, buyers should pay attention to this particular listing for this item, because it’s described as being “English dubbed” but the picture of the back reveals that it is in fact English/Japanese dubbed with English subtitles.

“FLCL” is perhaps the strangest anime in existance. It’s also enough to blow the top off of your head, with the strange characters and wildly surrealist plot. Fooly Cooly!

It’s peculiar the things that procure stuck in your memory. I never conception of this as an detestable film unprejudiced because the formula separates itself from the RKO depression-era 30’s (the film was made in 1949), though I seem to be hearing this a lot from critics. In fact, when I first saw the dance of ‘They Can’t Win That Away from Me,’ I actually concept it was a performance from a TV special, not a movie. The performance is an demonstrate, not a like scene. There’s something almost- I don’t know- *cold* about the diagram they depart on that bare, heavily draped, stage. It’s also the first and only adagio they effect in color- which, in itself has a sense of an era ending. Nevertheless, they have the same emotional connection to each other, and at the ages of 38 and 50 respectively, they composed carry off the grace and elegance. When they journey off the stage, an wrathful audience breaks into applause- like they’ve been watching an act from THE ED SULLIVAN Point To. It’s extrordinary that ten years after Rogers remade herself doing straight award-winning drama and Astaire remade himself as a solo performer and a man who could dance with impartial about anyone, they could decide abet into one more film and not have one strain of foot or hair out of situation. MGM formula and Oscar Levant aside, it’s a very nice arrangement to destroy a professional marriage.

I am a spacious fan of the conventional MGM musicals and have been more that elated with the restoration quality on every DVD transfer issued by Warners in the MGM library. The release of the “Dream Factory” collection is a fair example. These films could have been photographed yesterday (”Summer Stock” is a pure delight to search for in terms of narrate quality) . “Barkleys of B’way” unfortnately does not live of to the exceptional quality acheived on other films of this genre.

The DVD relate quality is very abominable and plain and the sound is very muted. I was so dissappointed in this treatment. The DVD appears to have simply transfered the Video to DVD. No restoration to the describe is at all apparent. Even the trailer looks better than the movie.

The extras are magnificent and I can’t complain here but hey Warners, what were you thinking when you tackled this gem. Someone must have been taking a sickie!

This review is for the Blue Ray collection. Picture: Pristine. Sound: Colossal. Movies: I & II – Immense Entertainment. Universal successfully resuscitated it’s feeble monster genre and transformed it into bigtime Tentpole event movies and produced two very suited action adventure rides to grasp with the kids. III – Phoned in. Brendan collects expansive paycheck and goes home. Rachel wisely stays away in the first dwelling. Kid being groomed to carry on – the dreadful man’s Shia (and I didn’t judge grand of him either) . Jet Li – stony and sullen. Sage is flat. Spend of China as a backdrop – secondary and poorly executed (nothing fresh or breathtaking here) . This truly is the sin – we’re actually IN China for heaven’s sake and there is no spacious vista, no enormous shots to dazzle us with the landscape. In watching the nightclub scenes I kept expecting Kate Capshaw to step out and open singing – it’s that derivative. Everything else is CGI. No overall quality to raise it to the level of the other two. But the kids will like the plod none-the-less…and yet…Worth the upgrade? YES – for the first two alone.

I bought these as a gift for my wife who was a astronomical fan of the first 2 movies. I had never seen them before. I must say I enjoyed all of them quite alot. They’re unbiased fun movies to glimpse. I was also very impressed with the quality of the blu-ray narrate and sound.

Greg Kinnear’s limited talents are stretched too thin in his role as a selfish con man who becomes a nice guy after being sentenced to work at the dead-letter department of an L.A. post office. Deciding that it’s nicer to help people than rip them off, Kinnear’s character leads a band of mailroom wackos in responding to the entreaties of those who write to God for divine help via the mailbox. The film strains to be reminiscent of Frank Capra’s populist comedies while also covering a lot of other, far less sophisticated comedy bases. Laurie Metcalf is mostly irritating as a neurotic postal worker who tries to keep the hero out of jail, when it’s discovered he’s removing dead letters from their basement burial ground. Hector Elizondo does his dignified thing, and Jack Klugman and Roscoe Lee Browne are somewhere in the mix. Tim Conway is the best element, a half-crazed mailman with the only shred of real humanity in this supposedly human tale. –Tom Keogh

Down in the Valley falls short of the greatness it’s striving for, but it’s a fascinating film that’s easily recommended. Serving as both star and co-producer, Edward Norton seized upon writer-director David Jacobsen’s neo-western screenplay as an opportunity to play the kind of daring and challenging role that Hollywood rarely offers. Norton’s considerable talent is fully engaged as he portrays Harlan Carruthers, a cowboy anachronism in California’s San Fernando Valley, where his Stetson hat, old-fashioned manners, and wild-west romanticism provide an escape from his dreary life of dead-end jobs and fleabag motels. We can’t tell if he’s really a former ranch-hand from South Dakota or a delusional psychopath, and that turns Down in the Valley into a suburban variation of Taxi Driver, with the threat of danger increasing as Harlan is befriended by Tobe (Evan Rachel Wood), a bored teenager who seduces Harlan for the sake of romantic adventure. Tension and suspense escalate even further as Harlan tangles with Tobe’s suspicious and belligerently protective father (David Morse) and lonely 13-year-old brother (Rory Culkin), but Jacobsen’s intriguing film grows problematic when it veers into mythic western territory. Struggling for present-day resonance with themes of rugged individualism and frontier manhood in an era when those qualities are virtually extinct, Down in the Valley reaches a climax that feels forced and unconvincing, but fine performances (especially by Norton) and Jacobsen’s bold, risk-taking direction make this a film worth seeing.–Jeff Shannon
